Ultimately, if GS wants to improve the content and average poster quality, instead of pulling crap like this, they should make it harder for the swarm of idiots to join the site during "hot" events like a highly anticipated review. Have a better screening process where new accounts need to be verified first, or even make it flat-out impossible for new users to join the site during critical events that are known to attract trolls, and worse.
Not the perfect solution, and not exactly fair, but still, much better than punishing regulars over the actions of people who have no interest in being a part of the community, and are here only to stir shit, spread hate and vitriol until a mod can deal with them...
I fully agree how a good ToU and staff should be about keeping away from things, unless the things get really ugly. A good posting experience is the one where every user can stand up for themselves without fear of getting moderated, instead of relying on mommy mods to fix their issues and help with hurt feelings. Being able to call out and shut an idiot up on your own accord is far better than cowardly relying on others to do it for you.
The lenient ToU, that was the best thing that ever happened to this place during my posting time, and having it taken away is a crime against every form of common sense.
This approach won't solve anything, the site will remain the same kind of a cesspool, comment sections still swarmed with low level accounts who stir some shit with a few posts, not caring what happens next. In the end, only good posters will suffer over this, the same posters who are used to be able to speak their mind, as it always should be!
