It doesn't look lik Sony going to be able to compete with MS this gen?

I am very glad I bought the PS4 last gen because no matter what fanboys say, it had the best games. No contest. This gen it looks like things have changed for Microsoft. Buying all of those studios, especially Bethesda, was a really good move. I'm not seeing Sony being the stronger of the two this generation. How is Sony going to compete with this?

Sony has:

Ghost of Tsushima which is great.

God of War, which was fantastic. Best Exclusive of last Gen.

Spiderman, which was average at best.

Horizon Zero Dawn - meh.

TLOU?

Unchrted?

What else?

Microsoft has:

Avowed

Halo

Gears

Hellblade

Fable

Fallout

Forza

DOOM

Starfield

Perfect Dark

State of Decay

PlayStation literally bought 6 studios this year.

Their internal teams are going to be working on more games this generation than ever before. Ex. The God of War team is already working on a new IP. Team Asobi is working on more Astrobot stuff. BluePoint is working on new IP. Insomniac is working on Wolverine and Spiderman 2 and maybe something else. etc

Their XDev teams are working with quite a few third parties to bring even more games like Sackboy A Big Adventure, and three multiplayer projects from people like Haven. Let's not forget about indie games either.

Not to mention they're moneyhatting games like Deathloop, Ghostwire, Forspoken, Final Fantasy 16 etc.

Certainly not going to be as one sided as last gen When it seemed like MS had all but given up.

They can’t compete. Microsoft will be giving you all these amazing games day 1 on GamePass. On the bright side, most Sony games can be played for free on YouTube though.

it's going to be interesting to see how it plays out alright.

At the moment, in terms of console sales, i dont think it will be close. it's hard to say at the moment since demand on both sides is greatly outstripping supply and Sony just put in bigger orders for silicon as they expected more demand for the PS5. but by 2026 i think a lot more PS5s will have been sold.

but i dont think MS particularly care either. they want gamepass subs. they want gamepass subs at neflix numbers and they want it available everywhere and on everything. thats their business model. if they can pull that off then they really wont care how many xbox consoles they sell.

in terms of games: MS certainly have some teeth and claws again...on paper at least. ID have consistently delivered great games. Bethesda are a bit more Hit/Miss and lately it's been more misses. Hopefully Starfield is great but its not a sure thing. really the last great game Bethesda made was skyrim (which should have its own dedicated console at this stage :P). They really didnt deliver last gen, with a meh Fallout 4, a shocking fallout 76, skyrim ports and some mobile tat.

the other side is, with MS now pulling Elder scrolls/fallout and such like from Sony/Nintendo, that leaves a gap for those companies to fill in themselves. Sony could very well get one of their studios to roll their sleeves up, take Elder scrolls, and set out to do everything it does...but better (and throw wads of cash at them to do it of course :P). Nintendo may.....actually nintendo remain unconcerned :P.

So yeah i certainly wouldnt go writing anyone off.

Hmmm, well seeing that the ps5 is besting the xsx/xss in sales, I’d go as far as to say that Sony is doing well against MS.

I think Sony will do fine. They have dozens of exclusive’s to build on. I have a XSX but no PS5 but planning on getting on when this shortage stops.

It's a great list if you have both consoles.

Sony will catch up once they start getting their big titles out

They will have to figure out a way to make buying full price games a viable alternative to what gamepass offers

@tdkmillsy: Demon's Souls, Returnal, Matterfall, Next Machina, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted Collection, The Persistence, The Playroom VR and a bunch of support work on games like Halo Infinite, Horizon, God of War, Tomb Raider, Forza, Avengers, Star Citizen multiplayer etc.

PlayStation Studios very rarely miss so I expect these teams to put out or help put out very good content.

BluePoint are completely unproven in making their own games. All they've done are collections, ports and remasters.

I agree with that. MS has set this gen up with a strong foundation for themselves.

@HalcyonScarlet: Sure, but thats still valuable experience and, they have the full backing of PlayStation now. Again, PlayStation Studios rarely misses.

Fwiw, they did implement new mechanics in Demon's Souls so making their own things isn't entirely new.

I can't wait to see what these studios working on for Sony. They need good showings.

All i know is that for 2022 Sony has only one game that i am interested in, and that's gow2. One game in 12 months is not cool.

PS studios definitely produced less games during the PS4 than PS3, but the games were a bit larger and more ambitious on PS4 than on PS4. They already have God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Gran Turismo 7 for the next couple years. If they announced another Uncharted, Last of Us, Killzone, Resistance, Littlebigplanet, Ratchet and Clank, Infamous, Twisted Metal, Sly Cooper, SOCOM, etc. they would be fine in addition to whatever new IPs their studios are going to develop. Naughty Dog has been rumored to be working on a new IP for quite some time now.

Sony pricing caused this, increasing game prices and lowering quality, no funding for new projects. Sony fans can only afford one or two games a year, broke ass bitches. Lucky they all have Gamepass.

Microsoft has nothing but Halo Gears and Forza, even then they went more than 10 years without producing a single quality exclusive while Sony was producing GOTY winner after GOTY winner every single year with multiple GOTY contenders and GOTD winners like The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2.

meanwhile I am enjoying Fallout and Doom on my PS5. just like I enjoyed the PS5 exclusive Deathloop.

In either case, let's see how things go when the PC releases come out. I imagine that will boost their sales quite a bit. They just need to work on getting the ports out faster and they should be good.

@mesome713: Deathloop is already on PS5 and not on Xbox. They'll also be on PC on day 1 and still won't lace the boots of titles like GOW2, TLOU3, GoT2, Uncharted 5, new R&C, etc.

Sony will make their bones doing what they do well. And GoW was not better than BOTW.

I don't get the love for botw. The game could be considered a good game, but certainly not the best zelda, and not nearly as good as god of war. Botw had a boting, empty open world. If it weren't for nostalgia, it would be a 7/10 game.

@tjandmia: nah. It’s the best game of last gen. It had more emergent gameplay then any other game. It was the pinnacle of open world gaming. GoW is great but nope.

What? Outer Worlds 2, Starfield, Avowed, Hellblade II, Fable, Everwild, Redfall, and State of Decay 3 are all announced 1st person titles in the works. And, that's not including existing 1st party like Sea of Thieves; and future 1st party exclusives like the next Fallout, the next Doom, the next Elder Scrolls, the next Deathloop (if it's made).

And Halo, Gears, and Forza.

I am not saying the future of Playstation is bleak. However, I am saying the future of XBox is pretty bright.

but it may be a moot point, they appear to be trying to consolidate different parts of the market, MS is pushing games as a service whereas SONY is still more about single player offline experiences, a market underestimated by Publishers and developers thats is still very relevant.

This thread is a strange thread considering the current state of things. Xbox is improving but the improvement is mainly with Gamepass superb offerings. Sony released two games this year and MS released two. I am referring console "exclusives". Listing games with no release date is pretty pointless.
