All party members in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
We've organized our Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth party members guide by focusing on those who are available by default (the ones who joined up in FF7 Remake). We then look at characters who join up during this particular game's campaign, followed by certain guest characters and some unexpected appearances.
Cloud Strife
- Status: Main character
- Role: Specialist damage dealer
The Ex-Soldier, Cloud Strife, is the game's main protagonist and nominal leader of the team. In combat, he switches between the Operator and Punisher stance. The former allows for quick flurries, rapid rushes, and ranged attacks, while the latter consists of non-stop heavy blows.
Barret Wallace
- Status: Party member by default
- Role: Ranged combat/gunner
Avalanche leader Barret is as gruff as ever, but he's now showing a softer side of himself after what the group has gone through in Midgar. Barret's basic attacks allow him to shoot foes with his gun-arm, dealing damage from afar. He can also do an Overcharge blast.
Tifa Lockhart
- Status: Party member by default
- Role: Melee combatant; aerial juggler
Tifa is Cloud's childhood friend from Nibelheim, though the two have grown apart over the years. Tifa specializes in quick melee attacks via punches, kicks, and uppercuts. Her Whirling Uppercut alternate attack, as well as many of her Synergy Skills, create openings to juggle enemies while in mid-air.
Aerith Gainsborough
- Status: Party member by default
- Role: Support combatant/healer
A Cetra or Ancient by origin, Aerith longs for a life of peace and harmony alongside her friends. Her calm demeanor is often seen in battle, where she casts magical projectiles with her staff, while also buffing allies or asking for their protection. Her Ward Shift action, meanwhile, allows her to change her location on the field while negating attacks.
Red XIII
- Status: Party member by default
- Role: Melee damage dealer
The intelligent feline Red XIII was experimented on by Shinra's diabolical scientists, before managing to escape with Cloud and co. When facing opponents, Red XIII can shred them with his claws, eventually unleashing his health-siphoning Vengeance attacks.
Yuffie Kisaragi
- Status: Joins your party at the end of Chapter 6 - Fool's Paradise.
- Role: Hybrid damage dealer
Yuffie is a young ninja from the nation of Wutai, which is now at odds with Shinra. Originally, she tailed Cloud's group as seen in the Final Fantasy Remake: Episode INTERmission DLC. Yuffie can become a party member in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at the end of Chapter 6 as the group is about to leave Costa del Sol.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: Yuffie was a missable companion in the original game. She appeared as a random encounter when you fought battles in forest areas on the world map, whereupon you'd have a chance to recruit her once she's defeated. That being said, she can also escape if you make certain mistakes, and you'd have to find her again. Let's just say that it's a lot easier to recruit Yuffie in Rebirth.
Cait Sith
- Status: Joins your party at the start of Chapter 9 - The Planet Stirs.
- Role: RNG-based tanky fighter
Cait Sith is a toy cat riding a fat robot Moogle, and we certainly don't want to spoil who's controlling him. Point is, he's mostly an RNG-based hybrid combatant. He can attack in melee with his claws and paws, or shoot magical notes with his megaphone weapons. He can also ride his Moogle in battle, while activating abilities that have different effects depending on dice rolls or slot machine results.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: Cait Sith joined you automatically as you explored the Gold Saucer in the original game. Here, he merely accompanies Cloud while roaming around the theme park. Eventually, a series of events leads the group to the Dustbowl (i.e. Corel Prison). The party then escapes to the wider desert beyond (i.e. start of Chapter 9). It's only at this point in Rebirth's campaign that Cait Sith officially joins the team.
Cid Highwind
- Status: First encountered at the end of Chapter 9 - The Planet Stirs.
- Role: Pilot and guest character, not an official party member
Cid is the pilot of the Tiny Bronco, a small plane that the group uses to go from Gongaga to Cosmo Canyon. This also unlocks the Tiny Bronco as a fast travel option to other locations with airfields.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: In the original game, players don't actually meet Cid until they reach Rocket Town, which is well after the group goes through Nibelheim. Cid's appearance as a pilot in Rebirth is certainly a welcome surprise.
Vincent Valentine
- Status: First encountered during Chapter 11 - The Long Shadow of Shinra.
- Role: Guest character, not an official party member
Vincent Valentine is a former Turk who's locked himself in a coffin deep beneath Shinra Manor. While he initially rebuffs the group's attempts to have him join, he later changes his mind since he's also hunting for Sephiroth. Note that he does accompany you in certain sections, though he doesn't officially become a party member.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: In the original game, Vincent only joins the party if you get the Mansion Key by unlocking a safe. The combination--36-10-59-97--is actually used in Rebirth. There's also a conversation where you have to tell Vincent about your quest to find Sephiroth. The difference here is that Vincent doesn't officially join as a playable party member. Still, there's always part three of this Remake trilogy.
Sephiroth
- Status: Temporary playable character during the Nibelheim flashback in Chapter 1 - Fall of a Hero.
- Role: Villain and cool badass, not a party member
Sephiroth is the primary antagonist of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is why it's a surprise to see him as a playable character. While this moment is fairly brief, it's still a cool nod to this particular instance in the original.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: The Nibelheim flashback in Rebirth follows the story beats of the original game, where Cloud recounts the events that transpired five years prior. The difference is that Sephiroth was only an AI-controlled companion in the original game. In Rebirth, you can control him during battles, even selecting abilities or Limit Breaks.
Zack Fair
- Status: Periodically becomes a playable character during certain segments.
- Role: A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Zack is an Ex-Soldier, and also the main character of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. You control him during a few instances in the campaign.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth versus the original: Zack was not playable in the original game. Let's leave it at that. Carry on.
